When I walked out of lecture today I saw some professors had set up two solar telescopes in the plaza for their astronomy class. Naturally, I hopped in line. No one seemed to mind and I got to see some prominences (arcs of gas that erupt from the surface of the Sun and held in place by the sun’s strong magnetic fields) and sun spots (cool spots resulting from convection within the Sun). I love university.
P.S. the gif above is of a solar flare.
